A Growing Question from a reader:
I live outside of Tampa florida and I was wandering if it was to late to grow a couple of veggies in December? I know in December we get about 2 weeks of cold now and then. I wanted to get a couple of trays or seedlings and grow some veggies with my kids. The kids really like to help plant things but I know they would be sad if everything they planted died due to the weather. The children especially like little tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and other small veggetables like that. Is it to late to plant them here in Florida?
It’s great that you are encouraging your children to help with the gardening. Gardening is a hobby that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. You have no idea haw many memories that you are planting in them as well.
Plant a mix of things that will help them keep interest. Radishes are a quick growing plant. Beans will take a little longer, but grow quickly.
Good Luck and Happy Gardening from Cathy and Neal!
If you stick with some cooler season vegetables, you know you will be safe. How about some radishes, lettuce, cabbage, onions, and other cool season plants. You could plant a couple of tomatoes in containers and being them inside if it gets too cool. Check out the hanging tomato growing bags, they are easy to bring in and out. You can also make a small cheap greenhouse for less than $100. Check out the info at Backyard Greenhouses
